My 2006 Year Highlights

2006 Spring Break family cruise to Mexico
Trip to Dubai and 1st time to India?
Family Birthdays

Marva in Sugarland Texas

Much of my spare time was involved with Caveman Youth Football.  2005 was the NYFL fiasco year and for 2006 we organized UCFC.  The Utah County Football Conference.  It took more time that I ever imagined but it worked well for years after.  We created Caveman Youth Football to align the youth program with the highschool program to enhance the program years down the road.  Salt Lake County was doing this for decades and we belived it was one reason High School football in Salt Lake county was on average a higher level of play.  State Championships don’t lie.  So the area Club teams, the AF Redskins, the AF Colts, the Alpine Bears, the Lehi Pioneers, The Cedar Hills Falcons,  all ended and were alined with their High School teams.    The other hugh change was the A and B team (AF Black or Red teams) organization.  While it may have its problems, many B team players developed in that enviroment and played high school football later.   While deleting emails recently, I forgot how much work and time was involved.  Dumping the NYFL dumpster fire from 2005 and then starting an entire new program was monumental in retrospect.  Equipment, Fields, Refs, City cooperation, etc.  Bylaws were written.  Rules created.  We created a program that seems to have done well.  Now part of the larger Utah Youth Football Conference, largely a Utah County Conference.   Great people like 1st four UCFC board members  and respective district presidents:  Brad Jenkins (PG), Robert Schimer Lone Peak), Michelle Smith (Lehi City), Bryce Flannery  and many, many coaches and voulenteers and the parents made the 1st season in 2006 a graeat sucess.  While I served, and yes served as no one was paid a dime from the UCFC.   Caveman Youth football did not pay or give coaches any discounts or remuneration.  All of the founders do so at great personal expence of time or coin.   10 years later, I often thought the time I spent could have been easily traded for an MBA or a startup business but now almost 20 years later I have few regrets.

I came across an email I replied to in 2006 as the head coach for the 6th grade team.  The mom was concerned about her son and the offensive head coach being hard on him.   I replied with the names changed here.  This email shows the  results of the newer more competative program Caveman Youth Football fostered.

Hi “Parent”, Thanks for your feedback. Some kids are having a hard time at  their positions and the coaches are asking them to do better. “Player” is our starting right tackle and we expect him to know and exicute his assignemnts.   I think player will do fine, but I am sure he feels the pressure of knowing, like ALL THE PLAYERS, he is evaluated on every play. If any player misses an assignment they hear about it. It will be this way from this age up. We are trying to be more positive at practice, looking for them doing a
great job. But we expect them to do that; the mistakes are easy to see and we take steps to correct them. No offense can work unless all the players do their job every play. Last year we did not score many touchdowns. My son Ben pointed out to me yesterday, that if a player only makes one mistake in ten,
and everyone does that in turn, one mental mistake on each play, you’ll never have any plays run properly. Ideally, everyone must do their job, or at least KNOW their job every time. They may not execute perfectly, but if they know what they are expected to do, and do their best, we’ll be OK.

Part of what is different this year is that we acutally have coaches that know the blocking assignements. I can not say for certain, but last year I got the feeling that coaches did not know blocking assignents, so they did not coach the boys about missing them. After all, they did not know themselves. These boys are older and smarter about football and we believe they can do it.

You can reinforce that by telling him that football requires great mental focus and knowledge. The days of big slow dumb linemen are in the past; these boys and all linemen have to know defensive formations and make quick decisions together as a team on the line. They also know that if they will not do their jobs, we will be forced to have someone else do it. In plan english, they lose their starting position. From this age forward, there will always be someone who wants their position because of the numbers of
kids in football programs. Let him know we have confidence that he can do it, or he would be replaced by now.

I do know too that coach  “Coach” feels a lot of pressure to deliver wins, and I expect that things will ease up a bit after we get into the season and things look good. Keep me posted on his attitude. Michael.

est regards,
Emirates

Ben Wrestling 2006

Middle School 2006 State Champ Ben Peterson 165 Pound Weight Class

AF Newspaper article

On 28 Jan. 2006 the CaveRats traveled to Orem High School For the 4A-5A State Junior High and Middle School State Championships

CONGRATULATIONS TO BEN PETERSON OUR NEW 165# STATE Middle School CHAMPION! Ben took the title after pinning Tripton, Jordan of Brighton in the semi-finals(in 8 seconds in the first period) and going on to pin Dawe, Hunter of TUG(Pleasant Grove) for the CHAMPIONSHIP.

This is Bens second year with the Caverats wrestling program. He is also involved with other sports (football, baseball and swimming). Ben just loves to compete. I think he gets that from his dad.

Caverats had three other wrestlers competing in the state tournament. Nick Muehlman wrestled his heart out but came up short on two very long matches. In no way was Nick dominated, in fact at different times during the match Nick had his opponents in pinning positions. Silas Olsen brought his game face to the mat as well. He made a few mistakes in the first match which cost him a victory. In his second match he was in control throughout the majority of the match, but some penalty points ended up costing him a one point deficit in the final score. Jacob Smith ran into some early round opponents which were very tough and did not fair well for the tournament. You’ve got to give Jake credit he keeps giving it everything he has every tournament. Brook Tanner would have wrestled but there was a registration problem that could not be worked out the day of the tournament.
